Close collaboration between Consultants in Restorative Dentistry and their colleagues in other dental specialities is essential if appropriate rehabilitation of the patient is to be achieved. An increase in the demand for more advanced treatment reflects changes in patient expectation with a reluctance to accept tooth loss and an increasing demand for advanced restorative treatment. There is often a need for comprehensive periodontal assessment and for advice and treatment of periodontal problems, which in the past have received insufficient attention. Tooth wear is an increasing problem that causes sufferers concern, requiring careful assessment and sometimes complex reconstructive techniques to avoid future treatment and failure.
A large part of the work of Consultants in Restorative Dentistry is concerned with assisting the primary care practitioner with advice and in the planning of treatment. Demand for this service has shown a marked increase as a consequence of the development of more complex forms of treatment.
A parallel can be drawn with the more complex forms of orthodontic treatment for which General Practitioners need an increasing amount of guidance from Consultant Orthodontists. |
